Center to host film festival

first_imgThe Saint Mary’s Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership (CWIL) will host a film festival this week promoting female filmmakers and films about women’s issues. The World Cinema Festival: Women Make Movies event will feature five award-winning films that cover a variety of international topics related to feminism. Mana Derakhshani, associate director of CWIL, said the festival fits perfectly with the mission of the College and its recent push to include more intercultural education learning opportunities. “President Mooney has led the way towards opening up the college to the world by stressing the importance of internationalizing the campus,” Derakhshani said. “This event is part of the efforts to bring the world to Saint Mary’s College and to increase opportunities for college students as well as the larger community to learn about their global community.” Saint Mary’s has hosted the Women Make Movies week for the past seven years, Derakhshani said, but it has not always been the World Cinema Festival. The French division of the Department for Modern Languages previously sponsored the festival, but after the department exhausted its grant money in 2011, CWIL decided to continue the festival. “CWIL took over and broadened the scope of the film festival to include foreign films from around the world,” Derakhshani said. The week features five films that illustrate various issues that women in different countries frequently deal with. They range from the challenges of growing up as a biracial woman in Canada to historical and contemporary feminism in Islam. As part of a women’s college, Derakhshani said CWIL is uniquely placed to feature women filmmakers and bring issues women face from around the world to the eyes of the Saint Mary’s community. The center worked with the Women Make Movies, an organization that promotes films by and about women, to put together the event. “The World Cinema Festival gives everyone the opportunity to learn about and engage with the rich tapestry of the world,” Derakhshani said. “The filmmakers we are featuring tell stories of women leaders in various cultures around the world. …The women are telling their stories in their voices and that is a powerful example of leadership.” The films are free and open to the public. They will be shown in Vander Vennet Theater in the Student Center each night at 7 p.m.last_img read more

ACEP unveils plan to manage fall pandemic wave

first_img Stephen Cantrill, MD, an emergency department physician in Denver and a member of ACEP’s clinical policy committee, told CIDRAP News that the novel influenza plan is also designed to raise awareness among emergency physicians. The potential burdens will be vast, he said, not only for keeping the workforce functioning during the surge, but also keeping departments adequately supplied. He added that planning for a second wave will be successful only with cooperation between first responders and public health officials. The plan urges local ACEP chapters to enlist support from state and local health directors, local emergency managers, and political leaders for emergency planning efforts. The 16-page plan was produced under a contract with the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and its Emergency Care Coordination Center, ACEP said today in a press release. The document defines critical capabilities and suggests ways to achieve them, ACEP said. As a result, if the second pandemic wave begins September, health officials may depend heavily on community mitigation strategies to slow the spread of the virus. Emergency departments will still face a surge of patients, but interventions such as school closures will likely strain the department workforces even further, the ACEP plan warns. The nation’s economic problems and the importance of staying on the job may add to the pressures to keep schools open, the planners wrote. News reports of deaths in young people, an age-group currently bearing the brunt of illnesses, might fuel even more parents to seek medical care for their children. Jul 6, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently released a plan to help emergency departments, first responders, and public health departments manage a surge in pandemic flu cases that many experts predict will happen this fall. The plan includes 27 capabilities for emergency department response to a severe novel H1N1 outbreak, each with suggested steps and an outline for what level of health or government group is responsible. For example, the plan covers personal protective equipment stockpiling, facility security, crowd management, alternate locations for triage and screening, and configuring waiting rooms for social distancing, if possible. See also: One of ACEP’s key planning assumptions is that large volumes of vaccine against the novel H1N1 virus probably won’t be available until mid October at the earliest and that the public won’t be protected from infections until 2 weeks after a second injection. “There are so many vulnerabilities in the supply chain, where do you start?” he asked, adding that even departments that are well prepared might not able to sustain their supplies. ACEP national novel H1N1 influenza strategy The impact of the influenza pandemic on emergency departments will be affected greatly by how local public health officials craft their messages to the public, Cantrill said. He said the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has done a good job communicating flu facts to the public, including details on when to seek medical care. “While the precise effects on emergency departments to function cannot be predicted with confidence, contingency plans should be made for a challenging scenario,” the plan states. Social distancing measures will also affect critical infrastructure businesses and institutions, which may slow the flow of transportation and supplies. Emergency planners shouldn’t assume that antiviral medications will be effective for a virus that may have undergone selection pressure between waves, the report notes. “While H1N1’s virulence is not predictable, it is expected to be highly contagious and will place added strains on the emergency care system,” said Nicholas Jouriles, MD, president of the ACEP, in the statement. The main components of the plan, based on the federal template for managing biological threats, include situational awareness, protecting emergency department infrastructure and personnel, preventing service disruptions, organizing a timely surge response, and recovering to the previous status. Communications with local and state public health officials are crucial, and it’s important to have agreements in place for the “triggers” authorities will use to “stand down” the pandemic plan, according to the document. French transfer window will open on June 8

first_imgFrench clubs will be able to start making transfers again on Monday, the Professional Football League (FPL) has confirmed. The 2019-20 season was cancelled in France after football around the world was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. In response to the crisis, FIFA gave permission for the summer transfer period to be moved and for expiring contracts to be extended as most countries are working to conclude the campaign. The transfer window in France usually opens on July 1, but the governing body has given clubs permission to begin trading with other French clubs before the fiscal year ends on June 30.Advertisement It is still to be decided when the international window will open. “The LFP Board of Directors decided to open the period of transfers between French clubs on Monday June 8, 2020,” a statement from the LFP read. “A forthcoming Board of Directors will fix the opening of the international transfer period and the eventual closing of the market in the light of FIFA’s decisions and the discussions in progress with the other European leagues.” After the season was called off in Netherlands and Belgium, the French league took the decision to scrap the remainder of the campaign in April when Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced no sporting events will be allowed to take place until September. There were 10 rounds of fixtures to be played in Ligue 1, but the title was subsequently handed to Paris Saint-Germain while Toulouse, Amiens and Nimes will drop down to Ligue 2. Endless mowing

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest I recently made a significant reduction in livestock numbers at our place. I was having trouble justifying the expense and the work required to care for so many critters so I decided it was time to make a change. The change wasn’t an easy one, but it has significantly lightened my livestock related workload and expenses. The one side affect to reduced livestock numbers that I had not foreseen was the reduction in grass eating power now residing in our barn. With less critters, I buy less feed, but I also have less natural grass mowers. This spring I have spent a lot of time mowing grass.I will admit that I might be overdoing it a little bit with the regularity of my mowing, but shorter grass is easier and faster to cut through and our rotary cutter has been in need of repair for some time. The lack of a usable larger field mower means that this spring I have spent much time seated on a riding mower while mowing not only the yard but the small field beside our house that used double as a pasture and arena but is now just an arena. By the time, I finish mowing, it seems like it is time to start over on another section of grass again. This seemingly endless mowing does become tiresome at times, but at least the weather is nice, and with less livestock to feed next winter, I won’t be worried about running out of hay when the snow is flying. I’ll take an extra ride or two on a riding mower any day to ward off the winter fears of running out of hay.I’m sure I’m not the only one feeling the pressure of endless mowing this time of year.last_img read more Do It Yourself – Create a Geotrail

first_imgSusan and Mark (team Calvertcachers) with SignalEditor’s note: Susan Kelley, Calvertcachers, has volunteered countless hours organizing geotrails in multiple states. A geotrail offers geocachers a variety of hides linked by a central theme or topic. There is often a prize for completing all or part of a geotrail. This article shares Susan’s experience and her advice on creating a geotrail. She’s been part of a months-long effort to launch the Capt. John Smith geotrail. The Capt. John Smith geotrail challenge begins on June How did the idea for the Capt John Smith geotrail begin?Susan: With the success of the Star-Spangled Banner Geotrail, The National Park Service (NPS) and Chesapeake Conservancy wanted to do something special to commemorate the adventures and explorations of Capt. John Smith. A Geocaching project was a perfect fit since Capt. John Smith was the first person to map the Chesapeake region beginning in 1607. His detailed map was published in 1612 and remained in active use for seven decades. Considering the primitive tools he had to use, the geographical accuracy is amazing. I would guess that Capt. John Smith would have loved geocaching! What’s involved in organizing a geotrail? How many people, maintenance, time, etc?Susan: Lots of work! In all seriousness, I have helped to coordinate four major trail projects, the first being the Maryland Municipal League Geotrail which was the first statewide geotrail in the United States. This trail launched with over 70 caches throughout Maryland. This was followed up with the M-NCPPC Park Ranger Challenge, the Star-Spangled Banner (SSB) Geotrail, and launching June 4th, the Captain John Smith (CJS) Geotrail. Both the SSB and CJS have caches in several states so it does take a great amount of coordination and hours of work.  However, these trails would not have been possible without the help of many volunteer geocachers.Capt. John Smith’s Original MapThe best aspect of geotrails is that it affords us the opportunity to partner with park, town, tourism, and government officials.  This has been a win-win for everyone involved and as they have learned more about geocaching, the more they have welcomed geocaching into their park or community.  With these trails, we have partnered a local geocacher with a facility.  The cacher would schedule a time to meet with the facility staff, give them an introduction lesson on how to geocache, and show them how to log-on and create a account. The cacher would help them select an appropriate location for their trail hide, place the cache and send us the hide details for the cache page.  Once the trails have launched, staff have loved meeting the many geocachers visiting their site.  The facilities/parks now get excited when they see a cacher going for their hide. Some will even help the cacher if they cannot locate the Describe the scope of the Capt. John Smith geotrail to us, what’s involved for the geocacher, when does it begin? Susan: The Captain John Smith Geotrail is set to launch on June 4, 2011. This date was selected by the NPS to coincide with National Trails Day. We are kicking-off the CJS trail with a special event GC2F414 at the National Colonial Farm – Accokeek Foundation.  The event will feature booths, exhibits and demonstrations from the Maryland Geocaching Society, Northern Virginia Geocaching Organization, Magellan, and many of the parks, museums, and historic sites along the CJS trail! Cachers will also have the opportunity to pick-up a copy of the passport and a list of CJS hides. We will have lots of nice door prizes including a GPS unit donated by Magellan!Capt. John Smith geocoinThe trail will have over 40 caches within Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. The trail will focus on five rivers; the Susquehanna, Potomac, Nanticoke, Rappahannock, and James (including the Chickahominy branch). The trail will work off of a passport system. Cachers will be required to find, log and post a pic at 15 CJS caches to earn a beautiful trackable CJS geocoin. The National Park Service and Chesapeake Conservancy have gone the extra mile by preparing a history write-up for every cache location. Each cache page will include a special history piece to give cachers an idea of what they will discover at the cache site. The history surrounding Capt. John Smith’s explorations is amazing! I am learning more and more each day with preparing the cache pages and I’m confident that folks will enjoy the Why a geotrail? What does this format offer beyond having a themed geocache or a Multi-cache? Susan: Geotrails offer cachers an experience that is linked by a central theme or topic with a variety of hides.  Cachers can pick and choose which caches along the trail are best suited for them or of their interest. A little something for everyone! Plus, there is a reward at the end.  We know how geocachers love challenges, so the trails offer cachers a fun What are folks reaction when they complete a geotrail and what sort of feedback do you hear?Capt. John Smith geocoin (reverse)Susan: With both the MML and SSB trails, the response from geocachers has been overwhelmingly positive. All of these projects required us to partner with park staff and/or government officials, so the hides are quality and each offer a little something special. No matter if it is a nice hike with a scenic view, or a multi/puzzle cache at a museum with fascinating exhibits and displays, the response has been great!   Log-on to and read some of the logs from the Star-Spangled Banner Geotrail caches. What is your advice if people would like to create a geotrail in their neck of the woods? Susan: Talk with cachers or geocaching groups within your region to gauge interest and willingness to assist. A trail will take the time and efforts of many.  If you have an idea, schedule a time to meet with your local tourism, parks or government staff and share your thoughts and the positive outcome a geocache trail will have for your community. Do your research and go prepared to the meeting with handouts, a presentation and stats from other geocache projects. Place a temporary cache and take them outside to find a cache!  A trail should have a related theme or topic and if the funding is available, a reward for the geocacher for completing the trail.  There are great resources on the site and most trail coordinators are willing to share information.  Reach out to others when doing your research. EX-IQ’s NoteCast is Changing The Way We Learn From Podcasts

first_imgHow to Make the Most of Your Software Developer… New Wave of Online Education: Helping Quiet Chi… EX-IQ What Nobody Teaches You About Getting Your Star… Podcasts are increasingly utilized for learning purposes. No matter who you are or what you’re interested in, there’s a podcast just for you. This abundance and diversity of content represents a real opportunity for lifelong learners in pursuit of intellectual growth. The question is, is the knowledge being presented in podcasts accessible in terms of fundamental long-term learning?    No, it isn’t. Luckily, EX-IQ has developed NoteCast, which will change the way you listen and learn from podcasts. Evaluating The Podcast MarketIn order to understand how we can learn more effectively from podcasts, it’s essential to understand the scope of the podcast market. According to the Pew Research Center, about 90% of Americans over the age of 12 have listened to a podcast. Another study, published by Edison Research, found that 26% of Americans listen to podcasts on a monthly basis. That’s over 70 million people. It’s estimated that there are over half a million active podcasts, and that number grows on a daily basis. Couple this statistic with the previously mentioned number of current listeners- and it is apparent that podcasts are runaway phenomenon; people simply love them.   It may be science that explains the draw to podcasts best; a study conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign found that in the brain interconnects hearing and the visual. To put it simply, the brain “sees what it hears.” In other words, your brain processes what it hears by recalling that knowledge in a visual (and relatable) form. This finding may be one component of the rise of the podcast market; this audio to visual translation helps listeners to better connect with and remember what they’re hearing. Another reason people have chosen to consume podcasts? Podcasts facilitate productive multitasking. More often than not, podcast listeners are listening to podcasts while participating in other activities. The research doesn’t lie: 52% of people listen to podcasts while driving. 42% of people listen while traveling 40% of people listen while exercising It’s clear that people feel as though they can listen and learn from almost anywhere, while doing just about anything.  This desire to consume content on the go will only grow as demand for skills suited to the information economy increases.  The growth of the podcast market demonstrates the need and demand for more adaptive and flexible, yet equally informative, learning. This trend didn’t hit us unexpectedly, either. For decades, educators have been differentiating their learning formats for students.  Now, podcasts are a single-format and versatile form of differentiation. Unfortunately, just listening to podcasts doesn’t give you the ability to retain all of the interesting information you’ve learned. Despite the visual effort of our brain to make the things we hear more tangible, learning effectively and in the long-run from podcasts is challenging. Effectively Learn from Podcasts with NoteCastPodcast listening is a growing phenomenon, and millions of people are embracing the medium as a more efficient way to learn. EX-IQ’s NoteCast app makes it easier to learn from podcasts.  Have you ever tried to take notes on a podcast? It’s hard because statistically, podcast listening is oftentimes happening on-the-go. NoteCast makes taking notes on your podcast effortless.  Using voice and touch commands, NoteCast will transcribe what you’ve found interesting and put it into a note. This note is forever saved on the NoteCast app. You can even tag the note and add comments to it as well. Even better, all of your notes are accessible on the NoteCast portal, where you can search them by date, podcast, episode, or tag.
