Hwang found that corporations were more likely to purchase foreclosed properties in predominantly black neighborhoods. Meanwhile, owner‐occupants were more likely to purchase foreclosures in hard‐hit mixed‐ethnoracial neighborhoods with substantial shares of non‐Hispanic/Latinx whites.Foreclosures in Boston are heavily concentrated in black neighborhoods, and as JSHS notes, over 80% of Boston’s foreclosures occured in just five of the city’s 15 planning districts, which make up just 30% of Boston’s housing units.“Compared to the city as a whole, the high-foreclosure block groups were, on average, home to about half as many whites and twice as many blacks,” said David Luberoff is Deputy Director of the JSHS. “However, high-foreclosure block groups were not the city’s most disadvantaged areas, which have large numbers of publicly subsidized housing units that are not likely to be subject to foreclosure.”According to Hwang, corporations were more likely to resell previously foreclosed properties to other investors and have reported maintenance issues against them. With this in mind, Hwang’s study alleges that “predominantly black neighborhoods hit hard by foreclosures in Boston were left further behind in the recovery from the housing crisis compared to other hard‐hit neighborhoods.”Stabilization, Hwang notes, would “require resources and incentives for both owner‐occupants and investors—both small and large—to maintain their properties and for investors to fill properties with long‐term renters.”Hwang’s complete study can be found here. If Dodgers keep winning, season could get historic in a hurry

first_imgLess believable, he said, “is more of the way everything worked out.”Wednesday’s 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox was the 10th game the Dodgers have won in their final at-bat this season. The 10 game-winning RBIs have come from nine different players. (Trivia answer: Yasiel Puig, Kyle Farmer, Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger, Chris Taylor, Corey Seager, Logan Forsythe, Austin Barnes and Adrian Gonzalez.)The Dodgers have yet to lose a game they led after eight innings this season, but they have won eight times when trailing after eight.“It’s been a wild couple months, that’s for sure,” Bellinger said. What lies ahead could get historic in a hurry. The implications of an 85-34 record with six weeks left on the schedule are staggering. The websites FanGraphs.com and BaseballProspectus.com both project the Dodgers to finish the season 111-51. The franchise record for wins is 105, set in 1953 in Brooklyn. The Dodgers can go 21-22 to end the regular season and still break that record. This is the franchise’s 134th year of existence. Consider that the Dodgers have played more than 20,000 games since Year 1 – 1884 – and raised their winning percentage from .526 to .527 in less than five months. But how do the 2017 Dodgers compare to all major league teams, ever? The 1906 Chicago Cubs and 2001 Seattle Mariners share the all-time record of 116 regular-season wins. To equal that mark, the Dodgers must finish the season 31-12, a .721 clip that would require they slow down a bit. The Dodgers are 30-5 (.857) since July 4. The post-World War I record for highest winning percentage in a season (.721 by the 1954 Cleveland Indians) is also within reach.A team’s “magic number” is the minimum number of games that must be played in order to clinch a berth. The Dodgers’ magic number to clinch a playoff berth is 19. The Dodgers could seal their fate as early as Aug. 27, a home game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the National League West is 24. The earliest they could clinch a division title is Aug. 30, a road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The New York Yankees established a modern record by clinching a playoff berth on Aug. 30, 1998. The Cincinnati Reds became the NL West champions on Sept. 7, 1975, the earliest a team has ever clinched a division title. For all the attention the Chicago Cubs garnered while ending their World Series drought last year, they did not clinch a playoff berth until Sept. 14. They won the NL Central the following day.Already, the Dodgers have a target on their backs, Manager Dave Roberts said.“When you’re an elite team and you look at what we’ve done, certainly every time they see us on the schedule they’re going to bring their best,” he said after Wednesday’s win. “Absolutely. I think our guys have set the bar for the league, and rightfully so.” LOS ANGELES >> Imagine going to spring training to watch the Dodgers, coming home, then going into a slumber for four months. You open your eyes in the middle of August and the Dodgers lead the National League West by 18 1/2 games. They can clinch their fifth straight division title before September and, by winning 32 of their final 43 games, break the all-time record for most wins in a season.Rob Segedin is not Rip Van Winkle, but his circumstances are illustrative. When injuries to his foot and wrist sent Segedin to the disabled list on April 19, the Dodgers were 8-8. They were 9-11 by April 24, the day before Cody Bellinger was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Since then they’ve gone 76-23; the Houston Astros have baseball’s second-best record during that time at 61-40.Segedin said he spent many a late night awake in Arizona, on rehab, watching the drama play out on TV.“I would’ve believed it,” Segedin said of the Dodgers’ record.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

Pesticide found in Donegal drinking water supply

first_imgA public drinking water supply in Donegal has been found to have illegal levels of the pesticide MCPA.The detection was made in Fanad East, which has led to the supply being placed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) watch list. This is the first time that MPCA was found in the level since Irish Water began sampling for pesticides in 2016. The pesticide is commonly used to kill rushes on wet land. The pesticide poses no threat to public health, according to Irish Water. The water authority is appealing to all users of pesticides including the farming community, sporting organisations and domestic users, to ensure that best practice measures to protect drinking waters are always followed.“Great care must always be taken to protect drinking water supplies wherever pesticide use is considered necessary, particularly if using products for grassland weed control containing substances such as MCPA, fluroxypyr and 2,4-D,” said the notice from Irish Water.“These substances and others have been detected in drinking water supplies across Ireland. While there is no threat to public health, the detected levels sometimes exceed the legally permitted limit value for pesticides in drinking water, which is set at an extremely low value (equivalent to one drop in an Olympic-sized swimming pool).” The Fanad East Water Supply will remain on the EPA watch list until one full season (April-Nov inclusive) of at least monthly compliant results is obtained and submitted to the EPA.Dr Pat O’Sullivan, Irish Water’s Regional Drinking Water Compliance Specialist said: “In Ireland, the majority (82 per cent) of drinking water supplies come from surface water sources such as rivers, lakes and streams. Supplies such as the Fanad East public water supplies are vulnerable to contamination from land and animal run-off. Irish Water asks users of pesticide products in the local catchment to consider the vulnerability of the water supply to pesticide contamination and the importance of this supply to the local community.”Pesticide found in Donegal drinking water supply was last modified: October 14th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Mayor Seattle to reexamine its helipad policy

first_imgSEATTLE — The city of Seattle will re-examine its policy on helicopter landing pads in response to Tuesday’s fatal crash at a busy downtown intersection.Mayor Ed Murray said at a news conference hours after the wreck that Seattle’s regulations on helipads changed at least 20 years ago, when the city instituted more rules and limited where helicopters could take off and land.“We need to look at it,” he said of the regulations. “In consultation with the council, we will decide if we need to adjust our policies.”The crash Tuesday morning happened as a news helicopter took off from a helipad at the KOMO-TV station. The chopper went down on a street near the Space Needle and exploded into flames, hitting three vehicles and starting them on fire. Both people aboard the helicopter were killed, and a man in a car was badly hurt. The wreck also sent burning fuel flowing down the street.last_img read more
