Even over this summer period, we were making lettings,” Burns said.“We have been able to deal with all the crises without having a rights issue and we’ve still bought property, we’ve got a lot of uncharged property that’s not mortgaged and a lot of unused facilities,” he added.Derwent marked a long-awaited return to investment with the £146m purchase of the West End’s Central Cross building in July. Rockhopper seals £203m fundraising to step up south Atlantic drill activity

first_imgTuesday 19 October 2010 7:38 pm KCS-content FALKLAND Islands-focused oil group Rockhopper completed a £206.3m fundraising yesterday in an effort to ramp up its drilling campaign in the south Atlantic region.Rockhopper, listed on the Alternative Investment Market (Aim), said the funds – raised through placing a total of 65,500,000 new shares at a price of 315p each – will help it to realise its goal of becoming the first oil producer in the region, after striking black gold at its Sea Lion oil resource in the Falkland Islands earlier this year. The new shares represent around 34 per cent of Rockhopper’s ordinary shares currently in issue. The fundraising was headed up by Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s oil and gas expert Andrew Osborne. Also acting on the advisory team was Canaccord.Rockhopper shares closed down 12p at 324p, though they have almost quadrupled their value this year after the original Falklands discovery. However, the stock fell sharply only last week, as investors were spooked by the company revising down its reserve estimates for Sea Lion. The UK has already introduced a one-off tax on bonuses and will impose a four-year levy on banks from the start of 2011.Consultancy PwC said the plans were less onerous than the mandatory breakdown of the number of staff in each pay band, which had been mooted by the Treasury.“The proposals do not include some of the more prescriptive elements of previous proposals, such as disclosure by pay bands. This should help prevent the unintended consequences that can sometimes follow pay disclosure, for instance pay ratcheting,” said Tom Gosling, a partner at PwC. The FSA said it is seeking feedback on whether to close the loophole that exempts banks based outside the European Economic Area from disclosure rules on remuneration. All UK banks will be asked to reveal details of pay policies on at least an annual basis, the FSA said, with the country’s top 26 institutions held up to the strictest scrutiny in reform linked to the Basel III global rules. Not only are managers vigorously and effectively regulated at a UK level, but they will soon also be subject to EU regulation, with the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) soon to be approved by the European Council. With new EU regulation approaching on areas like derivatives and short-selling, it’s worth remembering why the hedge fund industry is a good thing. The traditional defence of the industry is that it provides liquidity and price discovery to markets, and that is all true. But the industry actually has an important social role and provides value to the broader economy, beyond facilitating market efficiency. For example, the industry provides a lot of jobs, both directly (for managers) and indirectly (for advisers and service providers like lawyers and accountants) – about 40,000 in total in the UK alone, according to our research. It generates significant tax revenues too – we think about £3bn a year. That’s not chump change in these times. And because it is increasingly institutional investors like pension funds who make up the majority of assets managed, the industry has an important social role as the guardian of people’s pensions, of university endowments and charitable investments.Hedge funds do a good job protecting and growing those socially valuable investments because the investment strategies it employs – like short-selling – allow it to “hedge” and help prevent losses when markets fall. That’s why the industry delivers such solid returns for its investors. The figures suggest that institutional investment now makes up about two-thirds (and rising) of all assets being managed by the hedge fund industry. These institutional investors do extensive due diligence on the hedge fund managers they appoint. If they think it’s worth investing in hedge funds, surely it is worth listening to them? And there is another important market function hedge funds provide. They assume risk on behalf of other participants who are less able to do so.It’s better for everyone if risk is dispersed among lots of small, diverse players, rather than concentrated among a few big guys who all do similar things. The “biodiversity” that hedge funds provide actually helps reduce systemic risk and thus prevents financial instability. Andrew Baker is chief executive of the Alternative Investment Management Association. whatsappcenter_img More From Our Partners Brave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgI blew off Adam Sandler 22 years ago — and it’s my biggest regretnypost.comA ProPublica investigation has caused outrage in the U.S. this weekvaluewalk.comSupermodel Anne Vyalitsyna claims income drop, pushes for child supportnypost.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.org Hedge funds play an important role in society KCS-content Share Show Comments ▼last_img read more

Mortgage approvals in unexpected rise

first_img Mortgage approvals rose unexpectedly in November to their highest level since July, but unsecured consumer lending suffered its biggest monthly fall since August, Bank of England figures showed. The mortgage approvals figures chime with an unexpected rise in the Nationwide house price index in December, though activity is still much lower than 12 months earlier and many economists predict continued property market weakness in 2011.Mortgage approvals for house purchase rose to 48,019 in November from 47,315 in October, in contrast to economists’ expectations for a slight fall to 47,000.Net consumer credit fell by £121m, its biggest drop since August, after a £298m rise in October.Analysts had forecast a 0.2bn rise in consumer credit lending.
