That ended last year by giving the cops a 30 percent pay raise. Then last November, the voters doubled the pay of the city’s elected officials, and now it’s the city employees turn. The city had to raise the pay for cops to keep the city safe, and if the city is to provide quality public services, it needs to keep qualified city employees who are leaving.Just as the police department had retaining and retention problems, the city is finding those same issues with employees who provide city services. A city auditor’s report says this puts the city at risk of low morale, less institutionally knowledge, and increased costs to train replacements. These money problems go back to the late 1990’s and 2000’s when generous pension benefits were granted without paying for them.Proposition B allowed for changes, including scrapping the old lucrative pension system in favor of a 401k style system, but now that’s in jeopardy. An Anchorage House Member Has Introduced A Gun Bill

first_imgThe bill would allow authorities to temporarily take guns from people deemed to be a danger to themselves or others. The bill has been pending for over a year but is just getting attention now following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, on February 14.  The bill was introduced in 2017, after an Anchorage man was charged in the shooting deaths of five people at a Florida airport. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Matt Claman says formal requests must be made for a bill to be heard and he doesn’t think one was made until after the shooting. Representative Geran Tarr (D-Anchorage) introduced the bill that will go before the House Judiciary Committee this afternoon at 1 p.m. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享An Anchorage area representative has introduced a bill that would permit family members or law enforcement to remove guns from someone they believe could harm themselves or others. House Bill 75 reads: “An Act relating to gun violence protective orders; relating to the crime of violating a protective order; relating to a central registry for protective orders; relating to the powers of district judges and magistrates; requiring physicians, psychologists, psychological associates, social workers, marital and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors to report annually threats of gun violence.” Story as aired: Audio PlayerJennifer-on-hb-75-noon.mp3VmJennifer-on-hb-75-noon.mp300:00RPdlast_img read more

The Kenai Dipnet Season Is One Week Away No Retention Of King

An Upper Cook Inlet Personal Use permit and a 2019 Resident Sport Fishing license are required to participate. Only Alaska residents can participate Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享July on the Kenai is synonymous with dip net fishing. The City of Kenai City personal use dip net fishery is just over a week away from the official opening day of July 10.  Any king salmon caught incidentally during the fishery may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately unharmed to the water. Beech: “Here, in Kenai, we have the dip netting season, which is July 10th to the 31st, so we’ll see a huge increase of numbers here in the Kenai area. But there are some places that their tourism peaks in the first part of July and they’re tapered off and already starting to close by Labor Day. We have a pretty nice shoulder season, especially with the winter being so mild. We were starting to see RV traffic in the first part of May.” The personal-use dipnet fishery in the Kenai is set to open on July 10. This opening follows the Kasilof dipnet fishery which began on June 25.center_img The 2019 Kenai River late-run king salmon preseason forecasts is for a below average run, resulting in restrictions of inriver sport fisheries. ADF&G will continue to monitor the Kenai River run as it develops and additional actions may be taken depending on the run strength. Johna Beech, Executive Director of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce said although the fishery has its challenges, the annual influx of fishermen extends Kenai’s profitable tourist season.last_img read more

Developer Drops Plans to Build Turbines that Would Have Limited Sheppard AFB

first_imgA developer considering building wind farms outside Sheppard AFB in north central Texas has opted to abandon the projects following an effort by the base and the Sheppard Military Affairs Committee (SMAC) to alert Innergex about the threat turbines pose to low-level military training routes used by pilots, reported the Times Record News. “These projects would have had serious negative impacts on our ability to safely manage both civilian and military air traffic in those areas and would also have reduced the overall number of effective flying training days we have each year,” base spokesman George Woodward said last week.Officials from the base and SMAC are hoping to reach out to developers sooner to avoid potential conflicts arising later. “We believe that, by working together and communicating early in the process, we can reach mutually compatible solutions not only in and around military bases, but also around FAA-designated military training routes and operating areas in Texas and Oklahoma,” Woodward said.SMAC President Glenn Barham said the organization would be talking with state lawmakers about a new Oklahoma law that is designed to prevent encroachment from wind farms by ensuring developers and base officials talk early in the planning process and submit projects to DOD’s Military Aviation and Installation Assurance Siting Clearinghouse.Photo courtesy of Times Record News Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Arjun Kapoor Malaika Arora getting married on April 19 This is what

first_imgArjun Kapoor, Malailka Arora, Salman Khan, Boney KapoorInstagramThe reports of Arjun Kapoor and Malaika Arora’s impending wedding have been spreading like wildfire in the industry. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that the lovebirds are all set to married in April according to Christian rituals and on March 27 morning, the wedding date was out which is April 19. However, Arjun’s father Boney Kapoor has rubbished the reports of his son getting married to Malaika.”There’s no truth to these rumours,” Boney Kapoor told Amar Ujala when he enquired about Arjun-Malaika’s wedding reports.Earlier, it was reported that Boney Kapoor was not ready to accept Arjun and Malaika’s relationship considering his close connection with Salman Khan and family. Boney Kapoor had reportedly advised Arjun to stay away from Malaika as it was affecting his friendship with Salman. Apparently, Salman had even thought of banning Boney Kapoor from visiting his home because of Arjun’s growing closeness with Arbaaz Khan’s ex-wife Malaika. While Arjun Kapoor’s uncle Anil Kapoor had already accepted Malaika into the Kapoor family, Boney Kapoor was in dilemma about how to tackle the awkward situation. Arjun had left it to his uncle Anil Kapoor to bring around his father Boney Kapoor to have a word about his relationship with Malaika and make it official this year.As the time is passing by, Arjun Kapoor and Malaika Arora seems to have developed some sort of a comfort whenever they are stepping out together in the city. The lovebirds are often spotted spending some quality time with each other during their romantic outings and moved way beyond what people might say about their unconventional relationship.last_img read more

US Election How best to invest following Donald Trumps victory

first_img Following the surprising win of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the US presidential election, investors are today scratching their heads and trying to figure out what this means for the economy and for stock markets for the next four years.President-elect Trump has zero political experience, and thus his economic policies are more difficult to predict than with previous presidents-elect.Given the resounding majorities won by the Republican Party in both the US Senate and House of Representatives, the road is clear for the Republicans under Trump to pass new legislation for at least the next two years, when the US mid-term elections will be held.Greater government spending: Building and InfrastructurePresident Trump is likely to spend on infrastructure projects across America, including maintenance of road networks, improving airports and oil and gas pipelines. The most powerful economy in the world has surprisingly poor infrastructure, evident when you take a taxi out of Manhattan to New Yorks LaGuardia airport and experience the numerous potholes in the road. This infrastructure spending will benefit construction-related companies such as building company CRH (UK code: CRH), and equipment rental company Ashtead (code: AHT), both of which have huge exposure to the US.Greater government spending: Defence and SecurityDefence and security is a second area where President Trump is likely to spend more money, as this is a typical Republican policy priority.Homeland security is a very high priority if Trump is to deliver on many of his pledges to his voters. This higher defence and security spending should benefit suppliers to the US government such as BAe Systems (code: BA.).Good news for Health careThe US and European healthcare sectors have suffered in the lead-up to this election on the basis that the favourite, Hillary Clinton, was likely to enact heavy price regulation on pharmaceutical companies in the US, limiting their profit-making ability.Over the year to date, US healthcare companies like Pfizer and Merck underperformed the benchmark S and P 500 index by 10% in the run-up to this election.Since Trumps victory, healthcare stocks have bounced by more than the market, starting to claw back some of this lost ground, as Trump is seen as being much more business-friendly to this industry than Hillary Clinton would have been.In the UK, Shire plc (code SHP) is a key member of the FTSE 100 index that has huge exposure to the US pharmaceutical market, made even greater through its recent acquisition of US company Baxalta.Policy uncertainty is probably not good news for government bondsWith Donald Trump likely to increase government spending in order to make good on some of his populist promises to the US electorate, this extra spending is likely to result in more borrowing via bonds by the US government. The expectation of higher borrowing is already resulting in higher bond yields, and thus lower bond prices, not only for US Treasury bonds but also for UK gilts. So investors are likely to do better in the near-term focusing on healthcare, construction and defence/security stocks, and staying away from the gilt market until bond yields stabilise at higher levels. 22000 held in antinarcotic drive Minister

first_imgHome minister Asaduzzaman Khan. File photoAt least 22,000 people have been detained since 123 May launch of a nationwide anti-narcotic drive, said home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday.Speaking at a press meet at the Secretariat, the minister also said that the authorities will continue the drive until the drug trade is brought under control, according to UNB.The press meet was arranged to announce the schedule of programmes marking the forthcoming International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.Every year, 26 June is observed as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by the United Nations (UN) member countries. According to a resolution of UN General Assembly taken on December 1987, the day was fixed as an international day.Replying to reporters’ query on the number of deaths occurred during the ongoing anti-narcotic drive, the home minister said, “I cannot state the specific statistics of death in the moment but till now at least 22,000 were arrested.”Drive is against drugs and not aimed at killing anyone, claimed Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in reference to the deaths triggered by ‘gunfights’ during the anti-narcotic drive. The minister also added, “It’s normal for the law enforcers to open fire to protect their own life from the weapons of the illegal drug traders”.Earlier in the day, an alleged drug trader was killed and another injured in what the law enforcement call a gunfight with police at Chowka in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. With the latest one, at least 120 people were killed in ‘gunfights’ with members of law enforcement agencies while 37 bodies of suspected drug traders were recovered after reported gun battles between rival groups during the countrywide anti-narcotic drives since 15 May.The extrajudicial killings have created a wave of strong criticism across the country, particularly after the publication of audio clip of the killing of Cox’s Bazar Awami League leader Akramul Haque.Akramul Haque, a ward councillor of Teknaf municipality and local Awami League leader was killed in what Rab claimed was a “gunfight” between the elite force and drug peddlers in Cox’s Bazar on 27 May.On Thursday, speaking at a press conference at Cox’s Bazar Press Club, Akramul’s wife Ayesha Begum alleged that her husband was murdered in cold blood. She also gave journalists four unverified audio clips of chilling conversations in support of her claim. In one of the clips, a female voice is heard continuously screaming over a mobile phone hearing gunshots during a phone call. Ayesha claimed that the female voice was hers and the gunshots were fired at her husband.last_img read more

The inclusion of lay people is also among a moral “commitment” the bishops adopted Thursday morning on how to deal with sexual misconduct. But the language fell short of requiring bishops to take lay input, an important distinction that left victims advocates saying stronger measures are needed.Other clerics, such as Bishop William Shawn McKnight of Jefferson City, Mo., made clear that they support lay involvement regardless.“I believe it should be mandatory that we involve laity in the investigation of any case of sexual abuse by a bishop — or corruption, cover-up, involving the same,” McKnight said during the second day of voting. “I believe we should do that because that is the Catholic thing to do.”He added: “Lay involvement should be mandatory to make darn sure that we bishops do not harm the church in the way bishops have harmed the church — especially what we have become aware of this past year.”McKnight pointed to a section of “Lumen gentium,” one of the main documents of the 1964 Second Vatican Council, which, McKnight said, outlines the “obligation of the laity to be involved in the most important matters facing the church.”“Who can deny this is not the most important matter now of our generation?” he said. When Tobin was asked about McKnight’s comments at a news conference later in the day, he argued the new resolutions established a system that de facto requires lay involvement, and he said a gathering of metropolitan bishops, meeting on Wednesday, all agreed they could not now conduct an investigation without qualified lay people.“The possibility of doing that without qualified lay people, I would say is next to impossible — it is impossible,” Tobin said.Robert Deeley, left, bishop of the Diocese of Portland, Maine, accompanied by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, speaks during a news conference June 11, 2019, at the USCCB’s spring meetings in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)Bishop Robert Deeley of Portland, Maine, also insisted that lay involvement was already effectively baked into the process, saying, “I think that it’s already done.”But the resolutions are a far cry from proposals considered when the bishops last met in November, such as the suggestion of creating an independent nonprofit to oversee abuse cases — an idea shot down by Vatican officials who said it superseded the authority of the pope. The new reforms also did not impress advocates such as Becky Ianni, an abuse survivor and leader of the Washington, D.C., and Virginia chapters of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.Saying this week’s measures “aren’t going to change anything,” Ianni argued that the systems created by the bishops are simply “setting up new policies where (the church) is going to investigate itself.”Encouraging metropolitan bishops to appoint lay people to help with investigations, she added, is not the same as an independent process.“Anytime they can handpick the lay person, then that’s not independence,” she said. “We would really like them to contact their local attorney general and get three to four suggestions for experts.”In the meantime, she said, SNAP will continue to rely on civil authorities rather than the church to take action.“We have 20 attorneys general that are doing investigations (into Catholic sex abuse). We’re going to put our emphasis on getting the other 30 states to do the same.”Kim Smolik, CEO of Leadership Roundtable, a group consisting mostly of influential Catholic laity devoted to promoting better management in the church, said in a news release that she hopes the provisions are just the beginning of a lengthy process of reform.“A new culture of leadership is necessary if we are to truly address the crises,” Smolik’s statement said. “It starts by acknowledging the leadership failures, looking at the root causes, providing new formation in seminaries and other educational institutions, setting up governance structures with checks, balances, etc.” Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email Share This! That was for her late mother, who loved baseball, she said. Then she bounced the ball off her bicep — a little something to get some momentum, she said — and threw a curveball to White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito. That was a risk, she admitted. But it was worth it.“We need more people to just be themselves,” she said.“So much of social media is trying to be someone different. No, just put yourself out there and be yourself and allow God to do with you what you were created to do.”The sister was an “instant celebrity” at the ballpark, said Kozlowski. The video of her pitch quickly went viral, leading to an appearance on “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” and other celebrity turns for the sister. But her favorite moment came when a mother asked Sobieck to pose for a picture with her daughter at the ballpark. The girl, it turned out, had the same name as Sobieck’s mother. One of Sobieck’s sisters had told her beforehand her mother would be her “angel in the outfield” the night she threw out the first pitch. And there she was, she said.Sister Mary Jo Sobieck at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, where she teaches theology. RNS photo by Emily McFarlan MillerSobieck, 50, grew up in central Minnesota as the youngest of 10 siblings. Her mother had played a huge role in shaping her faith, singlehandedly raising Sobieck and several siblings still at home when her father passed away. She remembers seeing her mother kneeling on the porch, rosary in hand.Sports also were a huge part of her childhood, and she played softball, volleyball and basketball in school.“When I was a kid, my dream was to be a professional athlete or to be in the Olympics. Sports fueled my everything. It was my fire,” she said. “I remember when I felt the calling to religious life, it was like, I didn’t think that I could be passionate about anything more than sports.”Sobieck was teaching at a Minnesota school also affiliated with the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and training for a half marathon when she decided to enter religious life at age 25.“I was getting up in the morning at 5 o’clock and running. It’s like the grass was greener, the sky was blue, every song on my Discman at the time was like a love song from God to me,” she said. She had what she called a profound experience of God’s love when she volunteered to help one of the sisters move from the Minnesota school down to the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield in central Illinois.During that visit to the motherhouse, she saw the sisters there working as a team and realized religious life was something she could do.With so many siblings, she understood teamwork, she said. And it’s one of the things she loves so much about sports.“It shapes character and it inspires greatness and it pulls out your potential to be something more,” she said. “All of that is religious life, too. Your religious life is a team, and we push one another to be strong in virtue and character, and we work together to do something good for the human family.”Twenty-five years later, Sobieck said, she is excited to see how God is using the gifts and interests she believes God gave her and hopes it will be an encouragement to others.“You don’t have to give up your gifts or the things you’re passionate about. God integrates all of our gifts at a time when God wants to do that,” she said. The sister faces some stiff competition at the ESPYS.Other nominees in the “Best Viral Sports Moment” category include UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi’s joyful floor routine that earned her a perfect 10, which Sobieck called “phenomenal.” They also include Texas A&M hurdler Infinite Tucker’s Superman dive across the finish line and 7-year-old runner Rudolph “Blaze” Ingram racing ahead of his peers.“I certainly don’t belong there,” Sobieck said, noting that unlike her fellow nominees, she doesn’t regularly participate in the sport for which she is nominated.“But God is putting me there for a reason.”ESPY winners will be announced July 10 at the ESPN awards show hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The event gathers athletes and celebrities to recognize the year’s greatest achievements in sports.Fans can vote at ESPYS.com to choose the winners of the 2019 ESPYS before the broadcast begins on ABC.
