Dan Cohen AUTHOR Federal incentives to encourage private sector investment in the deployment of small modular reactors could generate a higher payoff than the government effort over the past decade to promote the use of renewable energy, according to a new Department of Energy report. Examination of Federal Financial Assistance in the Renewable Energy Market, co-authored by Kutak Rock and Scully Capital, estimates that $10 billion in incentives would be needed to deploy 6 gigawatts of small modular reactor capacity by 2035. The cost of such an investment on a per kilowatt hour basis would be only one-third as expensive as the federal government’s initiative to stimulate the development of solar plants and wind farms. From 2005-2015 the government provided $51.2 billion in mandates, tax incentives, loans and research grants to stimulate solar and wind production. About 90 percent of that investment came in the form of subsidies, which included investment and production tax credits. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. For Mazda, its latest recall focuses on connectors that might do weird things with the electrical system.Mazda announced this week that it will initiate a recall for 7,854 examples of the 2018 Mazda CX-9 crossover. The vehicles in question were built between Sept. 12, 2017 and Nov. 9, 2017.The problem comes from the wiring harness. A “weak retention force” in some wiring harness connector terminals might cause disruptions between different control modules in the car. Each presents its own problem, which complicates matters. In some cases, the turn signals may stop working, the engine might not restart or the passenger-side front airbag may not deploy in a crash. Each of these represents a unique safety hazard, but thankfully Mazda says it’s received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.Mazda didn’t say how it plans to remedy the situation, whether it’s installing new harness connector terminals or replacing parts of the harness or something else. It also did not say when dealers and owners should expect to receive notifications. Protostars as single objects or existing in binary systems are important for astronomers to study the mechanisms of star formation. In some protostellar binaries a peculiar “bridge” of material is clearly visible, which connects the recently formed components. This remnant material could be the key to better understand how stars form and evolve.IRAS 16293−2422 (or IRAS 16293 for short) exhibits such a bridge connection between the two companions. It is a young, Class 0 protostellar system located some 400 light years away in the Ophiuchus cloud complex, consisting of two protostars, designated IRAS 16293A and IRAS 16293B, separated by about 636 AU from each other.Besides an arc of dust and gas connecting the sources, previous observations of IRAS 16293 have also found outflows from the object “A.” These features make it a very complex system, where the observed gas line emission can only be explained by a combination of multiple physical components.In order to gather more information about on this subject, which could provide essential hints into the nature and evolutionary status of IRAS 16293, a group of astronomers led by Matthijs H.D. van der Wiel of the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON), has employed ALMA to observe this binary.The observations were conducted between June 2014 and May 2015, as part of the ALMA-PILS spectral imaging survey. From the data provided by the survey, the researchers chose molecular gas line transitions of CO, H2CO, HCN, CS, SiO, and C2H and used them to kinematics, density, and temperature in IRAS 16293.Analyzing the results, the astronomers found that the kinematically quiescent bridge of dust and gas spanning between IRAS 16293A and IRAS 16293B has a density within the range between 40,000 and 30 million cm-3, and is stable against radial collapse. The data suggest that this bridge is a remnant substructure of a filamentary circumbinary envelope that has undergone turbulent fragmentation to form both protostellar sources.Moreover, the observations uncovered the presence of a separate, straight filament seemingly connected to IRAS 16293B and seen only in C2H, with a flat kinematic signature. This structure stretches straight across source “B” at position angle of about 15 degrees. The researchers noted that the properties of this filament indicate that its origin in outflow activity of IRAS 16293B can be ruled out. Taking into account the results from ALMA observations and also from previous studies, the authors of the paper found that IRAS 16293B may be in an earlier evolutionary stage than the source “A.” In general, they concluded that IRAS 16293 may represent a particular stage in the evolution of binaries, a phase which many other protostars may go through at one point in their evolution. An international team of astronomers used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to investigate gas dynamics in a nearby young protostellar binary known as IRAS 16293−2422. Results of the observations, presented in a paper published March 29, provide more insights into the evolutionary status of this system. by NPR News Richard Gonzales 8.26.19 11:10pm In a long overdue tribute to the first African American to break international tennis’ color barrier, a new statue of Althea Gibson was unveiled at the opening day of the U.S. Open.The statue is comprised of five granite blocks and created by American sculptor Eric Goulder. It sits outside Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York.In 1947, Gibson broke into the elite ranks of the tennis world winning the first 10 consecutive American Tennis Association women’s titles. (The ATA was the tennis equivalent of baseball’s Negro Leagues.) At the age of 23, Gibson became the first African American player to compete in the U.S. Nationals, the precursor to the U.S. Open, in 1950.Between 1956 to 1958, Gibson made her mark. She won 11 majors, and was the first black player to win the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. When she retired in 1958, she was the top-ranked woman in tennis having won more than 50 singles and doubles championships.Perhaps because she was a star during a period when tennis champs made no real money and because she was a woman, more than a few people believe Gibson did not get all of the respect she earned as a trailblazer.”Recognizing for me as an African American woman and recognizing what Althea stood for and understanding that she truly broke the color barrier for tennis – a lot of people think it’s Arthur [Ashe], but it was Althea 11 years before him,” said Katrina Adams, former president and CEO of the U.S. Tennis Association.Adams, along with Billy Jean King, helped lead the campaign for the Gibson statue.”I said, ‘She’s our Jackie Robinson of tennis and she needs to be appreciated for it, and she’s not,’ ” King told the Undefeated in 2018. “I wanted something there that was permanent. I didn’t want just a one-day highlight.””It’s about bloody time,” said Angela Buxton of Britain, who won the 1956 French and Wimbledon doubles championships with Gibson, referring to the statue as quoted by the Associated Press.Buxton, who is Jewish, shared more than doubles titles with Gibson. She knew first hand what Gibson endured as a black competitor in a sport dominated then by white players.”Althea, with her two ticker-tape parades, still wasn’t allowed into a hotel where the whites sleep or a water fountain to drink where whites drink, but she helped to break that down,” Buxton said.After leaving the tennis world, Gibson had a brief career as a golfer, becoming the first African American woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association.Etched on one of the granite blocks of the Gibson statue is a quote from her: “I hope that I have accomplished just one thing: that I have been a credit to tennis and my country.”Gibson died in 2003 at the age of 76.Copyright 2019 NPR.
