Review • 2018 BMW 530e plug-in hybrid: The most practical 5er 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance is a premium plug-in hybrid More From Roadshow BMW Hybrids Luxury cars Auto Tech Sedans More about 2018 BMW 5 series Enlarge ImageThe wireless charger operates only slightly slower than the BMW i Wallbox, adding only 30 minutes or so to top off the 530e’s small battery. BMW In late 2017, BMW announced its first wireless-charging pilot program, which started in Germany. Using 2018 530e plug-in hybrid models, it marked BMW’s first foray into helping owners ditch plugs in favor of magnetic induction. We knew it would come to the US, we just didn’t know when. Apparently, that time is now.BMW announced this week that it will launch a 5 Series wireless charging pilot in the US. The pilot will be available only in California, and it will be limited to just 200 residential homeowners who have an enclosed garage space. In order to determine whether you’re eligible, BMW has an online questionnaire to fill out. Qmerit will handle the installation of the wireless charging pad and, thankfully, BMW will pick up the tabs for installation, maintenance and subsequent removal at lease termination. Don’t expect a free car, though. You’ll have to shell out for a 36-month lease on a 2019-model-year BMW 530e. The cars are available in white, black or blue, and they come loaded with a good amount of equipment, including leather upholstery and the necessary wireless charging hardware. It also packs the M Sport package, which adds 19-inch BMW M wheels, keyless entry, black exterior trim, a power tailgate, heated front seats and LED fog lights. The 530e is also loaded with all manner of active and passive safety equipment.Enlarge ImageNot the best parker in the world? Fear not, the infotainment system is here to help, with guidelines that tell you precisely where to park over the charging pad. BMW Initiating charging is nice and easy. Parking over the wireless charging pad will start the process without any further steps required on the driver’s part. The pad generates a magnetic field, which the car converts to electricity to charge its battery. The system charges at 3.2 kilowatts with an efficiency of about 85%, which is enough to fill up the 530e’s battery in about 3.5 hours. You don’t have to eyeball the parking job, either, even though the car can deviate from the optimum charging position by up to 2.75 inches longitudinally and up to 5.5 inches laterally. The charging hardware and vehicle connect over Wi-Fi, and a display appears on the infotainment screen with guide lines telling the driver how to park over the pad. It can be installed indoors or outdoors, and driving over the pad won’t hurt it. If anything is detected within the pad’s magnetic field that isn’t a car, it will switch itself off. Gdale@afro.com@GregoryODale On any given Friday night, the U Street corridor is bustling with a rather unique blend of hipsters, young professionals and students from nearby universities. At Indulj Restaurant and Lounge, a small eatery nestled just steps away from the U Street Metro station, you can also catch Marlee in the Mixx, a local progressive band bringing down the house. The nine-piece collective has been performing their signature “In the Mixx Fridays” series since last year and has performed at a myriad of shows across the country and around the world since forming in 2011.Perched in Indulj’s front window, Marlee in the Mixx regularly performs fan favorites including their renditions of Kendrick Lamar’s “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” Beyonce’s “XO,” and J. Cole’s “Power Trip.” This has proved to be a hallmark year for the group. In addition to releasing their highly-anticipated EP 10,000 Hours in May, the band made an appearance at this year’s BET Awards and was featured on TV One’s “Black Music Lives” commercial series.Collectively, the group ranges in age from 20 to 23. They may be young, but many of its members have been performing in Go-go bands for years. Their sound, a unique blend of neo-soul, rock, hip hop, and jazz, has garnered an impressive following. The band’s first single, “Cloud 9” received over 20,000 views on YouTube since its release in 2013. “Our sound is fresh, fun and universal more than everything,” said Foots, the band’s drummer. “Even something simple as a cover sounds like the original, but we end up taking it somewhere crazy. We’re learning how to play on our sound more than anything.”With a list of burgeoning acts from the DMV coming into the national scope, Marlee in the Mixx says their aim is to provide the world with something unique. “It’s a lot of talent out there, but [I do think some of it] is misrepresenting us as a whole,” Marlee, the band’s lead singer said. “But there are more people up and coming to change that. We’re doing this ourselves. We’re just young people going all the way hard.”For more information on Marlee In The Mixx and ‘In The Mixx Fridays,’ visit: http://www.marleeinthemixx.com/
Laura Jude Gardner, the second Black woman hired as a systems engineer at IBM in Baltimore and one of the founding members of the legendary Gatsby’s nightclub, died Jan. 5 at her Sutton Place home in Bolton Hill of natural causes. She was 72.Laura Jude Gardner was a scientist, pioneering engineer and nightclub owner. (Courtesy Photo)Gardner was born May 13, 1945 to George L. Jude, a former advertising manager at the AFRO and Vashti M. Jude, a Baltimore City Public Schools teacher. After Gardner graduated from Morgan State College in 1967 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mathematics, and subsequently obtained her Master’s degree in Physical Science at Morgan. After graduating from Morgan, Gardner went to work for IBM, where she was the second Black woman hired at the company as a systems engineer. But, despite the prestigious position, she found herself seeking more.“She was a very interesting person, she lived a very eclectic life,” said Elise Jude Mason, Gardner’s sister. Early on during her career at IBM, she connected with two colleagues at the company and the trio decided to venture into another career; the entertainment business.“I think for them, they had been at IBM for a while. They were making good money, but they weren’t passionate about it. That’s when they did it…that’s when Gatsby’s was born,” said Mason, alluding to Gardner and her partners pooling their resources and starting the legendary Gatsby’s disco and supper club in the early 1980’s. On the first floor of the club was the disco, where some of the top DJ’s in the city performed and upstairs was a supper club. Gatsby’s attracted some of the top music acts of the era including Gloria Gaynor and Phyllis Hyman.“Her first love was that Gatsby’s experience,” Mason said.Gardner and her partners also were owners of the Ritz nightclub, which occupied the old Playboy club on Light St., in downtown Baltimore, which attracted partygoers from Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and other locations in the Mid-Atlantic. “After disco died, it (ownership of Gatsby’s and the Ritz), became financially unsustainable,” according to Mason. After Gatsby’s and the Ritz closed, Gardner moved to Jamaica for a period of time. Years later, in 1998 she obtained a second Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. She later began another career, this time as an educator teaching in the Baltimore City Public Schools for 17 years. Gardner taught science to students at the Laurence G. Pacquin School, as well as Booker T. Washington Middle School until her retirement in 2015.Gardner was an accomplished graphic artist, a skilled writer, she enjoyed travel and was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She leaves to mourn: her sister Elise Jude Mason, an attorney; her nephew Fred D. Mason, III, an architect; two grand nephews and many first and second cousins.
