In November, Musk tweeted that Tesla “just acquired trucking capacity” to improve Model 3 delivery times. In March, a filing from the SEC showed that Tesla registered about $14 million worth of company stock in order to acquire trucks and trailers from California-based Central Valley Auto Transport, Inc., further boosting its delivery capabilities. While the Semi is not yet a production vehicle, according to a text message from a Tesla spokesperson, the Semi has been used “many times” for hauling to and from Gigafactory and elsewhere, so it appears there are no issues surrounding the idea of using a development vehicle for real-deal deliveries. The spokesperson also confirmed that the cars in the video were actual owner vehicles, and that those vehicles were delivered to their owners using the Semi. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Tesla is determined to get its own trucks delivering its own vehicles as the automaker expands its offerings and the markets in which they’re sold. 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500HD first drive: Teched out for towing The Tesla Semi isn’t even in production yet, but it appears at least one early model is getting put to work.Tesla on Monday tweeted a video of its all-electric Semi hauling a carrier’s worth of Tesla vehicles. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Manuel Carrillo III/Roadshow Modern vehicle wiring is complex. If even one thing goes wrong, a litany of problems could crop up, some of which might affect the vehicle’s overall safety. For Mazda, its latest recall focuses on connectors that might do weird things with the electrical system.Mazda announced this week that it will initiate a recall for 7,854 examples of the 2018 Mazda CX-9 crossover. The vehicles in question were built between Sept. 12, 2017 and Nov. 9, 2017.The problem comes from the wiring harness. A “weak retention force” in some wiring harness connector terminals might cause disruptions between different control modules in the car. Each presents its own problem, which complicates matters. In some cases, the turn signals may stop working, the engine might not restart or the passenger-side front airbag may not deploy in a crash. Each of these represents a unique safety hazard, but thankfully Mazda says it’s received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.Mazda didn’t say how it plans to remedy the situation, whether it’s installing new harness connector terminals or replacing parts of the harness or something else. It also did not say when dealers and owners should expect to receive notifications. Nevertheless, once you receive a recall notification in the mail, it’s best to call your dealer to confirm everything and set up an appointment to have the issue remedied. 2019 GMC Sierra Denali review: So close to greatness 2019 Honda Ridgeline: The commuter’s pickup truck 2019 Honda Odyssey offers plenty of room and features for families 68 Photos 26 Photos 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport loves to hustlecenter_img 2019 Acura MDX adds new features and an A-Spec model Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. BMW launches 2019 5 Series plugin hybrid wireless charging pilot in California

first_img Review • 2018 BMW 530e plug-in hybrid: The most practical 5er 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance is a premium plug-in hybrid More From Roadshow BMW Hybrids Luxury cars Auto Tech Sedans More about 2018 BMW 5 series Enlarge ImageThe wireless charger operates only slightly slower than the BMW i Wallbox, adding only 30 minutes or so to top off the 530e’s small battery. BMW In late 2017, BMW announced its first wireless-charging pilot program, which started in Germany. Using 2018 530e plug-in hybrid models, it marked BMW’s first foray into helping owners ditch plugs in favor of magnetic induction. We knew it would come to the US, we just didn’t know when. Apparently, that time is now.BMW announced this week that it will launch a 5 Series wireless charging pilot in the US. The pilot will be available only in California, and it will be limited to just 200 residential homeowners who have an enclosed garage space. In order to determine whether you’re eligible, BMW has an online questionnaire to fill out. Qmerit will handle the installation of the wireless charging pad and, thankfully, BMW will pick up the tabs for installation, maintenance and subsequent removal at lease termination. Don’t expect a free car, though. You’ll have to shell out for a 36-month lease on a 2019-model-year BMW 530e. The cars are available in white, black or blue, and they come loaded with a good amount of equipment, including leather upholstery and the necessary wireless charging hardware. It also packs the M Sport package, which adds 19-inch BMW M wheels, keyless entry, black exterior trim, a power tailgate, heated front seats and LED fog lights. The 530e is also loaded with all manner of active and passive safety equipment.bmw-530e-wireless-002Enlarge ImageNot the best parker in the world? Fear not, the infotainment system is here to help, with guidelines that tell you precisely where to park over the charging pad. BMW Initiating charging is nice and easy. Parking over the wireless charging pad will start the process without any further steps required on the driver’s part. The pad generates a magnetic field, which the car converts to electricity to charge its battery. The system charges at 3.2 kilowatts with an efficiency of about 85%, which is enough to fill up the 530e’s battery in about 3.5 hours. You don’t have to eyeball the parking job, either, even though the car can deviate from the optimum charging position by up to 2.75 inches longitudinally and up to 5.5 inches laterally. The charging hardware and vehicle connect over Wi-Fi, and a display appears on the infotainment screen with guide lines telling the driver how to park over the pad. It can be installed indoors or outdoors, and driving over the pad won’t hurt it. If anything is detected within the pad’s magnetic field that isn’t a car, it will switch itself off. US Election How best to invest following Donald Trumps victory

first_img Following the surprising win of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the US presidential election, investors are today scratching their heads and trying to figure out what this means for the economy and for stock markets for the next four years.President-elect Trump has zero political experience, and thus his economic policies are more difficult to predict than with previous presidents-elect.Given the resounding majorities won by the Republican Party in both the US Senate and House of Representatives, the road is clear for the Republicans under Trump to pass new legislation for at least the next two years, when the US mid-term elections will be held.Greater government spending: Building and InfrastructurePresident Trump is likely to spend on infrastructure projects across America, including maintenance of road networks, improving airports and oil and gas pipelines. The most powerful economy in the world has surprisingly poor infrastructure, evident when you take a taxi out of Manhattan to New Yorks LaGuardia airport and experience the numerous potholes in the road. This infrastructure spending will benefit construction-related companies such as building company CRH (UK code: CRH), and equipment rental company Ashtead (code: AHT), both of which have huge exposure to the US.Greater government spending: Defence and SecurityDefence and security is a second area where President Trump is likely to spend more money, as this is a typical Republican policy priority.Homeland security is a very high priority if Trump is to deliver on many of his pledges to his voters. This higher defence and security spending should benefit suppliers to the US government such as BAe Systems (code: BA.).Good news for Health careThe US and European healthcare sectors have suffered in the lead-up to this election on the basis that the favourite, Hillary Clinton, was likely to enact heavy price regulation on pharmaceutical companies in the US, limiting their profit-making ability.Over the year to date, US healthcare companies like Pfizer and Merck underperformed the benchmark S and P 500 index by 10% in the run-up to this election.Since Trumps victory, healthcare stocks have bounced by more than the market, starting to claw back some of this lost ground, as Trump is seen as being much more business-friendly to this industry than Hillary Clinton would have been.In the UK, Shire plc (code SHP) is a key member of the FTSE 100 index that has huge exposure to the US pharmaceutical market, made even greater through its recent acquisition of US company Baxalta.Policy uncertainty is probably not good news for government bondsWith Donald Trump likely to increase government spending in order to make good on some of his populist promises to the US electorate, this extra spending is likely to result in more borrowing via bonds by the US government. The expectation of higher borrowing is already resulting in higher bond yields, and thus lower bond prices, not only for US Treasury bonds but also for UK gilts. So investors are likely to do better in the near-term focusing on healthcare, construction and defence/security stocks, and staying away from the gilt market until bond yields stabilise at higher levels. I am fed up of never getting the credit Karan Johar

first_imgKaran Johar on nepotism and much more.YouTube ScreenshotKaran Johar, who is often subjected to criticism on charges of things like nepotism to making movies only with big stars, expressed his annoyance at all those negativity around him.In an interview with Rajeev Masand, Karan opened up about being called the “baap of nepotism”, and also said that he is always criticised for things that people perceive to be wrong, but he is never given credit for the good works that he does.”I am fed up of never getting the credit for the good that we do, but be slammed for the bad that happens, or the bad that are perceived to happen. I can make the best feature film on this earth, and I will not get the credit that it deserves. You will not give me yourself, because you will feel that if you are nice to me then it will look like you are being nice to me for a certain reason, and not because you think I deserve it,” Karan said.On asked about the charges of nepotism, and if he feels a sense of responsibility to introduce talented people from outside, KJo countered it with a few data.”We have introduced 21 debut directors, out of which, about 16 or 17 of them are not nepotistic young film-makers. They are completely from the outside. Why don’t I get the benefit of that like – hey, there is a production house that is launching kids as film-makers who are from outside. Why don’t I get credit for that? Why only the discredit for some of the actors? And why do I have to justify it? How do they not know that I think they are talented enough to face the camera?” Karan said.”Yes, they get easy access, but after that they got a journey ahead. I don’t feel like constantly justify this, it gets on to my nerves now. Let me tell you, if they don’t have talent, the audience is not going to accept them, the industry won’t accept them, and I myself as a producer will not constantly put them in a film if they are not worth it. I am not stupid!” he added.Karan also spoke in length about the recent controversy where he was accused of throwing a drug party after a video of many stars partying at his house had gone viral. Is It Harder To Distribute Aid in Puerto Rico Than In Other

first_img Share Angel Valentin for NPRCrowley shipping containers with running refrigeration systems are lined up at in the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico. They’ve been there for days, goods locked away inside. As thousands of containers with food and other basic supplies sit undistributed at Puerto Rico’s ports, we asked Houston Community College‘s Professor of Logistics James Battieste whether moving the aid in a devastated island is more complicated than in mainland, and what would be the best course of action.Millions of Puerto Ricans– who are U.S. citizens– are stranded in the island without food, running water, electricity, or fuel, many days after category five Hurricane Maria devastated the territory. The Mayor of  San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz, publicly begged for help from Washington. Last week she expressed her gratitude for the relief efforts but also indicated that FEMA ‘s bureaucracy and  other logistics inefficiencies had created a bottleneck in the distribution system. Professor Battieste says that the starting point to assess this kind of situation is: Who is in charge of the management of these emergencies?“In order to answer that question, let examine each of these crises to identify that role, if any.A week prior to the storm in South Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, information was provided by the national weather agencies regarding Harvey’s potential impact, direction, speed, and estimate time of arrival. This information was disseminated to public, private, federal, state, and local government agencies.   As a result, electrical exchanges, medical and local businesses, public utilities developed their emergency response plans. In addition, public transportation, communication networks chemical and telecommunication entities develop emergency plan to address the impact to their industries, such as refinery, electrical exchange, transportation infrastructures, railroads, harbors and airport systems. In the case of South Texas, the role of leading this effort was a combination of private, public and government entities collaboration.Houston Community College’s Logistic Professor James Battieste. Oct. 2nd, 2017Now compare that synergy/effort to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Island and the Caribbean emergency plan, if there was any plan or collaborative effort! What plan or contribution did any Federal agencies contribute to the developing or supporting this crisis? They may have had their individual emergency plans, but as such there was not of a collaborative plan to administer a cohesive coordinated effort that would remediate Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands crisis. Let’s define logistics: Logistics is development and implementation of procedures and processes, which control the efficient and effective forward and reverse flow of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customers’ requirements. Humanitarian logistics is the process and systems involved in mobilizing people, resources, skills, and knowledge to help people who have been affected by either a natural or man-made disaster.Logistics affect how well (or how poorly) an entity and its associated partners can achieve goals and objectives. As a result of the lack of a comprehensive emergency plans in place we have the crises confronting Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. What would be a recommendable system/chain of command in a situation like this? Logistics management utilizes the system approach to business problems. The systems approach acknowledgement that all entities, federal, local agencies, private enterprises, public and corporate partners recognize their mutual interdependency. System approach requires that the goals and objectives of the collaboration will ensure that all human, social, and services are available immediately.FEMA does not manage emergencies. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from and mitigate all hazards. FEMA roles is in conjunction or in collaboration with private enterprises, public entities, federal, state and local government agencies in addressing crises such as what happen in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas storms and flooding.”To the question of whether helping an island or group of islands make logistics more complicated, Battieste’s answer is: “No.”“The recommended entity to lead Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island relief campaign would be the National Guard. The National Guard is comprised of citizen soldiers with various business expertise and skills. Their command center operation possess the communication and administrative capacity required to provide appropriate assessments and responses in order to coordinate all plans. Support, such as trucks, gas storage units, helicopters, boats, medical services, construction and communication system, and material handling expertise is available through their units.”last_img read more
